Differentiation and the Brain (Fall 2019)



A learner-friendly classroom requires that the teacher understands neuroscience and the complexity of differentiation. In this online book study, participants will read and discuss Differentiation and The Brain by Dr. David A. Sousa and Carol Ann Tomlinson. A large component of this course is to reflect on your teaching practices and implement changes that will support the various cultures, genders, and learning styles in the classroom. Fall Cohort begins September 25th through December 2019. 

*Must obtain Differentiation and the Brain, 2nd edition to complete course.


Learning Path Outcomes:
  • Explore different types of teacher and student mindsets and how they affect teaching and learning
  • Encounter five components of brain friendly curriculum
  • Examine the purposes of assessments and learning strategies that take into account the diversity of learners
  • Explore the importance of student readiness and how to respond through differentiation
  • Learn how to Differentiate by Content, Process and Product Based on Readiness
  • Understand that learning styles, intelligence preference, culture and gender are all important factors when responding to students needs through differentiation.
  • Apply learning in order to manage a differentiated classroom
